[메디컬투데이=김준수 기자] As temperatures drop ahead of winter, the number of patients complaining of shoulder pain increases. This is because the frequency of occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders and the increase in pain are correlated with the drop in temperature. In particular, the shoulder is the only joint in the body that can rotate 360 degrees, so it is often injured due to frequent use in daily life.

However, if unexplained pain continues even though there is no trauma or accident, calcific tendonitis may be suspected. Calcific tendonitis is a disease that occurs when stone-like calcium deposits accumulate in the tendon. Although this infiltration can occur anywhere in the tendon of the body, calcium accumulation is especially commonly observed in the supraspinatus tendon of the shoulder joint.

When calcium phosphate, one of the components that make up bones, accumulates in the rotator cuff, the shoulder tendon, for some reason, inflammation occurs. Additionally, the joints harden like stones, causing extreme pain and limiting the range of motion. Movement disorders that prevent the patient from easily lifting their shoulders and arms decrease their quality of life. In general, pain tends to worsen at night, leading to sleep disorders.

The main cause of calcific tendinitis is degenerative changes in the shoulder tendons. The rotator cuff, which receives a lot of exercise, ages quickly, and as the tendon ages, calcium accumulates inside the tendon cells. If this process is repeated, a layer of lime builds up, leading to shoulder pain. As aging is the main cause, it is mainly found in people over 30 years old, and it is mainly observed in middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s.

Director Kwon Yong-shin of Olvaro Hospital said, “Calcific tendonitis is one of the major diseases that reduces the quality of life, so prompt action is required. Upon visit to the hospital, non-surgical or surgical treatment is applied depending on the severity of the patient. “For early stages of the disease, non-surgical methods such as extracorporeal shock wave therapy to break down limescale or injection treatment to soothe inflammation are mainly used,” he said.

He continued, “In cases where it is difficult to deal with non-surgical methods alone, arthroscopic surgery is performed. This is a method of inserting a thin tube about 4mm thick that combines a microscopic camera and surgical instruments into the body. It is highly accurate in accurately examining, diagnosing, and treating problems in joints with the naked eye. “The incision range is less than 1cm, so recovery is quick,” he explained.
