Have you ever suffered from inflamed gums?
Gingivitis can start insidiously. A large group of people with gum infections do not notice it for a long time. Others notice it when brushing their teeth and suffer from bleeding gums or bad breath, for example. Yet gum disease occurs in thirty percent of the population over the age of 35. Checking by a dentist and dental hygienist is therefore very important for early detection.
Gum inflammation (periodontitis) so what?
If not treated, a mild inflammation can lead to a serious inflammation of the gums and/or jawbone (periodontitis). This inflammation is caused by bacteria accumulating around teeth and molars and forming plaque. The bacteria in the plaque produce substances that irritate the gums and cause an inflammatory reaction.
With periodontal disease, the gums may be red and swollen. The gums can eventually recede, exposing the necks of the teeth. This can cause pain with hot, cold, sour and sweet food and drinks.
However, the inflammation itself rarely causes pain in the gums and can therefore go unnoticed for a long time. If the inflammation is not treated, it can spread to the underlying jawbone, causing bone loss. As a result, the teeth and molars will eventually become loose and lost.
Scientific research shows that gum disease is also a risk to overall health. This is because the bacteria associated with periodontal disease produce toxins. These so-called toxins can enter the bloodstream and cause serious conditions or worsen symptoms. Consider the risk of heart and vascular disease in diabetes.
Gingivitis and what next?
A timely visit to a dental periodontist is a key moment in diagnosing and treating advanced gingivitis.
Because periodontal disease usually does not cause any pain, it is important that you visit the dental hygienist regularly. Your own dentist or dental hygienist can determine with certainty whether you have periodontal disease. PPI Hoorn works closely with your dentist and/or dental hygienist, so feel free to ask for a referral to a periodontist.
Stop the ignition!
During the first visit to the periodontist, the health of the gums and the bone underneath are examined. With an extensive examination of the mouth and X-rays, the periodontist will gain a good picture of the causes and consequences of the inflammation. A treatment plan is then drawn up to control the inflammation and tackle the cause of the inflammation. This means a thorough cleaning that goes further than that of a regular dentist or dental hygienist. If necessary, the deeper areas under the gums can also be cleaned with a minor surgical procedure. This is all done in a patient-friendly manner and according to the strict guidelines of the Dutch Association of Periodontics.
PPI Hoorn has been specialized in 30 years gum treatments. Our experience shows that serious gum infections can be treated effectively and sustainably. Gum treatment with the PPI Hoorn ensures the maintenance of a healthy, beautiful smile line and reduces the risk of general health problems.
Need implants?
If you are missing one or more teeth, this may cause problems in your daily life. Eating or talking can be more difficult and many people with missing teeth are ashamed to smile fully. This often also applies to people with dentures, plates or removable dentures.
If you would like to be able to talk, laugh, chew and bite off unhindered and without worries, then an implant may be the solution for you. The big difference with other solutions is that an implant feels as if it were your own teeth.
The implantologists at PPI Hoorn are the only ones in North Holland to work with the latest digital technology; “guided implantation”. A completely digitally prepared and developed Swiss system. Using a specially custom-made mold, the implants are placed precisely and with minimal intervention. Make an appointment via our website if you are interested.
