The number of people suffering from colorectal cancer in Hong Kong has increased significantly in recent years, which is suspected to be related to eating habits. Early colorectal cancer may not have any symptoms. Common symptoms include abdominal pain; changes in bowel habits; frequency of stools may increase or decrease; texture, color or volume may also change, and even blood may be present. If anemia is present, the person may feel weak, tired easily, or short of breath.
If you suspect colorectal cancer, it is recommended to undergo Colono-scopy; the doctor puts a fiber optic tube with a microscopic camera lens into the large intestine through the anus, and can accurately check whether there are lesions in the large intestine mucosa, such as polyps Meat or colorectal cancer.
In the treatment of colorectal cancer, surgery is usually required to remove the tumor (Colectomy). Depending on individual circumstances, chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be considered before or after surgery. After removing the tumor, the surgeon can most likely reconnect the ends of the large intestine right away, and you can have a normal bowel movement after recovery. If the doctor cannot reconnect the large intestine right away, a small hole needs to be made in the abdomen. The end of the large intestine is connected to the small hole to facilitate defecation. This is called a “colostomy”. Some patients only need a temporary stoma, and they need another operation at a later time to reattach the large intestine. The stoma of individual patients may be permanent, and the “ostomy nurse” can give appropriate guidance to properly handle the stoma. If the tumor has spread to other organs, such as the liver or lungs, chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be considered, depending on the individual case. If the scope is not large, another surgical resection may be considered. Patients with colorectal cancer must receive regular checkups after recovery. If there is any sign of colorectal cancer recurrence, they can receive treatment immediately.
Healthy living habits can reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. It is recommended to eat more fruits and vegetables and less meat, do more exercise and avoid smoking. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, consider genetic testing and regular colonoscopy.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government implements the “Colorectal Cancer Screening Program” to subsidize Hong Kong residents aged 50 to 75 to undergo screening; they first undergo a fecal occult blood test, and if the result is positive, they will be arranged to undergo a colonoscopy and remove the large intestinal polyp at the same time to avoid transformation into colorectal cancer.
