Jakarta –
Recently the discussion about ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder went viral on social media. This started with a social media user who called himself having ADHD because of his unusual behavior. What exactly is ADHD?
Quoted from the National Health Service UK (NHS), ADHD is a condition that affects behavior. People with ADHD can experience restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and act on impulse.
ADHD symptoms tend to show at an early age and may become more noticeable when a child’s circumstances change, such as when they start school.
Most cases are diagnosed when children are under 12 years of age. But there are also cases that are newly diagnosed or discovered after a person grows up.
Symptoms of ADHD
ADHD symptoms can be categorized into 2 types of behavior problems:
- inattentiveness (difficulty concentrating and paying attention)
- hyperactive and impulsive
Many people with ADHD have problems that fall into both of these categories, but that’s not always the case. For example, about 2 to 3 in 10 people with the condition have problems with concentration and focus, but not with hyperactivity or impulsivity.
In addition, ADHD is more common in boys than girls.
Causes of ADHD
The exact cause of ADHD is currently not fully understood. However, there are a number of risk factors that can increase a person’s exposure to this condition. Among them:
- genetic factor
- Brain injury
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Exposure to chemicals, such as lead, when the mother is pregnant
- Smoking habits and excessive alcohol consumption when the mother is pregnant
- Lack of parental attention
