Trump (Trump) won the White House with 312 electoral votes. Next, each state must certify its election results and send them to Congress to officially declare Trump the winner.
On the night of the U.S. election on November 5, the media announced the vote results for Trump and his opponent Kamala Harris based on the vote counting results in each state. After confirming that he had won enough electoral votes, Trump declared victory before 2:30 a.m. on November 6 and delivered a victory speech.
However, after states initially announce the vote share of each candidate, they still need to certify the general election results. The certification process can take days or weeks, depending on the state.
The first step is to verify the votes to ensure that all valid votes are counted. This phase includes checking the number of mail-in ballots, early voting, overseas voting and Election Day voting with the number of registered voters. Many states also conduct post-election audits to verify that voting equipment used during the election counted votes correctly. In an extremely close election, a recount may also be needed, which could prolong the certification process.
Once the above steps are completed, the vote is certified. Each state has a different deadline by which election officials must issue a written statement certifying the validity of the election results.
After that, members of the Electoral College will gather in each state capital in mid-December to cast their state’s electoral votes for the president and vice president. This year it is scheduled for December 17th.
States then send their Electoral College vote results to Vice President Harris and the archivist. On January 6, 2025, the House of Representatives and the Senate will hold a joint meeting. Under the auspices of Vice President Harris Harris, the electoral votes of each state will be counted, the final voting results will be certified by Congress, and then the president-elect will be officially announced.
