Undersecretary López-Gatell Refutes Claim of 30 Million Mexicans Without Access to Health Services

The Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatellrejected this weekend that there are 30 million people in Mexico without access to Health servicesas recently reported by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (coneval).

In his speech at the national forum “Health, food and healthy environments”, López-Gatell He assured that this figure corresponds to the people who were asked if they had Popular Insurance and answered no, because it no longer exists.

The official explained that the question on health was multiple choice, where there was a list of seven Mexican institutions, at the end the Popular insurance.

“In the 2020 census, it is the first time that pollsters arrive and ask: ISSSTE?, no, Pemex?, no,Popular insurance? And people said oh wow, no, well, I heard that Seguro Popular has already disappeared, no coverage, there are 50 million people, it wasn’t 50 because according to them we were 21 and now we have 50, so those thirty-something is the difference Millions of people,” he said.

In its 2022 Poverty Measurement report, the coneval detailed that from 2018 to 2022, the percentage of people with deprivation due to access to health services health it went from 16.2% to 39.1%.

In other words, a total of 20.1 million people did not have access to health services in 2018, while by 2022, this figure increased to 50.4 million. In 2020, the year the Covid-19 pandemic began, 35.7 million Mexicans could not access these services.

In addition, he also disapproved of the accusations due to the shortage of medicines in the public health system and blamed the officials of the hospitals in the country.

“This shortage is manufactured or residual, for the most part we have a full supply, we have made all the contracts, we have acquired the medicines in a timely manner, but there is a more or less configured network of counter employees in the hospital pharmacy or the address that continue to protect these interests,” he said.

In the case of the cancellation of health regulationsthe undersecretary pointed out that the criticisms correspond to the protection of commercial interests: “We rethink the economic relationship between the public buyer, the government and private providers, we clean up corruption and we remove ourselves from those structural ties,” he added.
