Health personnel from Piura indicated that there would be an underreporting of fatal cases of dengue, because relatives take patients with dengue symptoms and they die in their homes.

Official data from the Piura region indicates 12 deaths confirmed by dengue. “We probably already have more. Family members choose to take patients, self-medicate and then die at home,” a nurse reported.
