In the meantime, however, he shone with an unexpected bronze medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, adding to his collection of achievements including the title of world champion.

But this season is difficult for the 39-year-old Veselý. Even before the great race in his native Hodonín, he complained of a cold, because of which he almost did not start. And the breathing problems did not leave him.

“He felt well before the trip, during the flight to the USA he probably caught a cold from the air conditioning, and already the second day after his arrival he had a fever,” says representative doctor Karolína Velebová.

There was still quite a bit of time left for the competition, the qualification is scheduled for Friday night, but Veselý’s condition did not improve significantly. “He tested negative for covid, the values of inflammatory parameters were low. But he is suffering from severe bronchitis, and despite all the care, he is not able to perform to the maximum,” added Velebová.

“I believed that I would be able to put myself together towards the competition, but unfortunately that didn’t happen, so it will be better to fly home earlier, undergo some tests and try to prepare for the European Championship,” stated Veselý with a view to the August championship in Munich .
