01/04/2022 – Under what circumstances will Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 games be postponed? This question has arisen more and more in view of the current corona situation.
The DFL statutes adopted by the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs are decisive for decisions by the DFL about the cancellation of games.
The regulations with regard to a possible dismissal due to illness of players eligible to play for the licensed team are in § 2 No. 3 of can be viewed on dfl.de. Guidelines for the DFL game rules recorded. This stipulates that an application by a club to cancel a game must not be granted if more than 15 licensed players and / or amateurs / contract players in the licensed team are available. These must include at least nine licensed players, including a goalkeeper.
The basis for reviewing an application is a list of playing eligibility between each club and the DFL, in which all players are listed who are eligible to play in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 for the club.
As part of the examination of an application, the DFL can request, among other things, certificates from the treating doctor (s) and written confirmations from the team doctors or hygiene officers of a club regarding official quarantine orders for players. When deciding on an application – as has been stipulated for many years in the guidelines on the rules of the game – facts typical of sports (e.g. injuries, sports fines) are not to be taken into account. Banned players or players with “typical sports” injuries are therefore considered to be “available” in the sense of the statutes.
If, under the above-mentioned conditions, the examination of an application for a game cancellation shows that no more than 15 licensed players and / or amateurs / contract players eligible to play in the licensed team are available within the meaning of the statutes, the application will be granted – as already happened in a total of 17 postponements during the past 2020/21 season.
