Under the microscope 600 million pounds contracts for the coronavirus in Britain – 2024-09-23 17:03:48

An inquiry into questionable coronavirus contracts worth more than £600m under Conservative governments will be ordered by Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.

It is expected to call for an investigation into more than half of the contracts (such as those for masks, after the previous government proposed to stop all efforts to investigate them.

The move is being hailed as a counter-attack by Labour, which is under pressure over a range of issues, including the thousands of pounds worth of gifts it has received from donors.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s wife, Victoria, was also targeted by critics for her clothing choices amid a mini-scandal over undeclared donations of clothing from a businessman to the prime ministerial couple.

According to the Guardian, in her speech Reeves is expected to say: “Billions of pounds of public money have been handed out to friends and donors of the Conservative party. After our election we identified £674 million worth of personal protective equipment contracts. So we will keep our commitment to appoint a Covid corruption commissioner. It couldn’t be more urgent.”
