In Singapore, which is currently under the highest alert regarding Covid-19 cases, only low-intensity exercise is permitted to wear a mask at all times in indoor facilities.
A person who takes classes like spin, zumba and yoga that are usually considered more intense, it is still possible to wear a mask, however, fitness experts say people should not push themselves in terms of wearing a mask while exercising.
“Participants should consider their personal medical history, their experience and familiarity with this type of exercise, as well as any symptoms experienced during class to decide if it’s too intense for them,” said sports doctor Dr Cormac O’Muircheartaigh. Channel News Asia.
According to him, people with underlying health conditions that affect the heart and lungs should be very careful when doing more intense exercise using a mask.
These conditions include asthma, heart rhythm problems or ischemic heart disease. Those with previous illnesses or injuries should also take extra care.

“Masks will increase the work of breathing and increase discomfort until difficulty reaching peak heart rate or exercise intensity,” said Dr. Cormac.
