Commentary by Tadashi Yatabe U-12 coach
Q: Thinking back to the tournament, the top 8 result.
“In this tournament, the players also want to aim for the best in Japan, so we started this season.
It was great to get through what I thought was a mountainous qualifying round. After that, I managed to win one in the final tournament.
Even in today’s quarterfinals they finished 1-2, but the fact that they scored a goal made me feel that they have improved and I think it was a tournament where we could see their growth.
On the other hand, players were aiming for the best in Japan, and I was aiming for that too. As for the result of finishing in the top 8, I have to think back to the past year because it wasn’t enough to catch up with the top 8 in Japan. As a coach, I also said to the players: “Let’s take home that this year hasn’t been the best in Japan”.
Looking back frankly, I still lacked the strength. However, I would like to go back to Matsumoto with pride because they are the first team in the prefecture to make the top 8, and I hope they lead me to the next one.
Q: What did you learn from the competition and what challenges did you face?
“I tell my kids that ‘a title cannot be carried to the next category’. Even throughout the season, they have failed to make it past the group stages at the Small Olympics and the World Challenge, but they have worked hard to get through them and have been able to advance through the qualifying rounds. I think that’s what I got from the competition.
As for our task, we need to improve on our individual strengths, which can be said in any group championship match, including today’s chancellor and yesterday’s Sorezo (Kumamoto). While I manage the team as a team and make countermeasures, the players who have responded well are wonderful, but as an individual I have to improve when I think about the future. Players, coaches and clubs should not take their eyes off this.”

“The first goal was scored, so I didn’t talk much, and another goal was scored, which put us in a difficult situation. It was a frustrating match with a distant goal.
We’ve been knocked out of the qualifying rounds in national competitions like the Chibi Olympics and the World Challenge, but we managed to get through the qualifying rounds in this tournament, and I think it was a great tournament where we were able to grow by showing our points of strength.”
