JAYAPURA, KOMPAS.com – The existence of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) disturbs security in a number of districts in Papua Province, it is difficult to stop them as long as they are still able to buy firearms and ammunition.

Papua Police Chief Inspector General Mathius D Fakhiri said that so far his party suspected source of KKB funds comes from unscrupulous government officials to the confiscation of village funds.

However, Fakhiri confirmed that the KKB’s main source of funds to be able to obtain firearms and ammunition came from illegal gold mining areas in several districts in Papua.

“The (gold) panning site contributed greatly to the purchase of firearms and ammunition,” he said in Jayapura, Thursday (8/3/2021).

The remote location of illegal mining places minimal supervision from the security apparatus so that this is what KKB uses to obtain funds.

“The panning area is usually far from the authorities’ supervision. Some (KKB) come to collect tribute, some are also panning,” he said.

There are several districts called Fakhiri which have illegal traditional mining areas.

“Paniai, Intan Jaya and part of Yahukimo. If Timika is clear, that’s why we move the miners a bit there so that they don’t pan again,” he said.

Without mentioning the details of the number, Fakhiri believed that from the illegal panning area, the KKB could get quite a lot of funds.

He is determined to cut off all sources of KKB funds so that the security situation in Papua can be conducive.

“We will monitor this so that they do not look for money there and the money is used to buy the equipment,” said Fakhiri.

Head of the Papua Province Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Office, Frets J Boray, confirmed that there are illegal mining locations in the four districts.

The distance from the mining locations makes it difficult for the government to reach them so that supervision or even control is difficult.

“We have proposed the area, until now the minister (ESDM) has not issued a permit so that we can monitor it. It’s still illegal so we can’t do anything,” said Frets when contacted by telephone, Friday (9/4/2021) .
