Unconventional but effective treatment for mental disorders

Strength training works against depression

‘We know that physical activity has a positive effect on your mental health,’ says one of the researchers, Ben Singh of the University of South Australia. ‘But despite the abundance of evidence, it is often not chosen as the first treatment. Our analysis shows that physical activity can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in all types of patients, with some benefiting additionally.’

The researchers saw in the analysis results that strength training seems to work best against depression. Yoga and cardio, on the other hand, seem to have the greatest effect in people with anxiety complaints.

Increased serotonin and noradrenaline levels

Moderate to high intensity physical activity is most effective against depression and anxiety. The researchers explain that this is partly due to neuromolecular mechanisms such as increased levels of serotonin and noradrenaline. In depression, serotonin and noradrenaline levels are lower, so these neurotransmitters are important for our happiness and mental well-being.

Surprisingly, the research also shows that people get better results with short, weekly workouts than with longer workouts. According to the researchers, this has to do with the manageability for people with mental and perhaps physical challenges.

“It’s important to emphasize that apparently it doesn’t take much physical exercise to achieve a positive effect on mental health,” says Ben Singh.
