Why do they have these names?

The history of the particular nominations of this Spanish municipality originates in the 20th century, with the town postman. He could not deliver the parcels because most of the residents had similar last names: Rica, Molinero, Gárate and Guerrero.

Since they couldn’t change people’s last names, Adolfo Moreno, municipal secretary at that time, convinced everyone to give the babies different names.

And they took it literally.

Moreno was inspired by the Saints of the Catholic Church and the Roman Martyrology.

“It was a brilliant idea. They are original names. I love my name. The day I was born coincided with that saint”, said Hierónides Ranulfo, grandson of the municipal secretary, to the ‘BBC’.

The curiosity about eventual names went much further: the International Meeting of Rare Names was held in Huerta del Rey on August 8, 2008, and with this they achieved the position in the Guinness Record.

Colombia

In 2021, the Colombian media El Tiempo published the story of a young man named “6” Martínez Medina, the 19-year-old was born in Santa Ana, Magdalena, and got that name because he was the sixth child of his parents.
