Unconventional and Unique Baby Names: From Spain to Singapore

One of the most decisive moments for many couples when they know they are going to be parents is thinking about the name of their future baby. Many parents get very creative and have gone beyond what anyone could imagine.

From ordinary people to celebrities, they have named their babies with some of the most eccentric and peculiar names.

spain

It is not necessary to go around the globe to find particular names, we just have to focus on Huerta de Rey, a municipality in Spain.

In fact, it was recognized in the Guinness Book of Records for being the town with the rarest names in the world.

There were 333 private denominations of its inhabitants during 2010, according to the ‘BBC’. The municipality has not grown too much. By 2020 it had 901 residents.

Firmo, Burgundophora Cancionila, Restitution, Virisima, Dulcardo, Cristeta, Canuta, Barachisius, Anisia, Philadelphus, Evilasius, Hieronides, Clodoveus, Onesiphorus, Crescentius and many more reside there.

The company

The man has had problems with the police. One day he went out without his identification and they did not believe that his name was that.

“I signed ‘I sign’ and the guard didn’t believe me. He gave me another fine. I told him that it was true, that he called me that. In the end, he told me to go with my ID (identity card) and that if it was true he would forgive me the fine. I arrived, I put ‘I sign’. They told me: ‘We’re never going to end’”, he joked in an interview with ‘El Mundo’.

Burgundophora Cancionila

Mrs. Burgundófora has not found namesake.

“The first time everyone makes a mistake when they say my name. I tell them to call me Fori. They are thinking of proposing me for the Guinness as the rarest name ”he mentioned for the ‘BBC’ at the time.

Filogenio

“I don’t have a nickname, my name is enough. But they call me Philo. Everyone misses my name and they ask: how did he say it? sorry? It’s like that all day. They never spell it right. They write Phylogenius, Phelogonium, Phyllogirius. My brother is called Auspici ”, he stated in 2021.

Why do they have these names?

The history of the particular nominations of this Spanish municipality originates in the 20th century, with the town postman. He could not deliver the parcels because most of the residents had similar last names: Rica, Molinero, Gárate and Guerrero.

Since they couldn’t change people’s last names, Adolfo Moreno, municipal secretary at that time, convinced everyone to give the babies different names.

And they took it literally.

Moreno was inspired by the Saints of the Catholic Church and the Roman Martyrology.

“It was a brilliant idea. They are original names. I love my name. The day I was born coincided with that saint”, said Hierónides Ranulfo, grandson of the municipal secretary, to the ‘BBC’.

The curiosity about eventual names went much further: the International Meeting of Rare Names was held in Huerta del Rey on August 8, 2008, and with this they achieved the position in the Guinness Record.

Colombia

In 2021, the Colombian media El Tiempo published the story of a young man named “6” Martínez Medina, the 19-year-old was born in Santa Ana, Magdalena, and got that name because he was the sixth child of his parents.

But this is not the only “weird” name in that South American country. Here we show you more:

620,346 boys and girls were born in Colombia during 2020. However, twelve babies, of the more than 620,000, do not have a namesake and even writing or saying their name would cause problems.

The girls were registered as:

– Eudy

– It is

– Dial

– Eliz Yael

– Gia Tanit

– Laia Milu

For their part, the children were called as:

– Alcairo

– Braider

– Eferson

– Kael Asaf

– With Emir

– Max Müller (his parents probably wanted to pay homage to the 19th century German philosopher and linguist whose name was Friedrich Max Müller).

Also, in Colombia there is the peculiar case of a man named Walt Disney de Jesús.

Chile

In 2004, a child was named in Chile after Shakespeare Mozart Armstrong.

Another couple wanted to honor a very famous alcoholic drink and named their son Jack Daniels.

Singapore

A unique and particular name from this country draws a lot of attention, as his parents made a very strange combination naming their son Batman Bin Suparman.

Several celebrities and influential people have also attracted attention by naming their children in very particular ways.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Canadian singer Grimes named their first baby X Æ A-12. The baby was born in May 2020.

The news left his thousands of followers with their mouths open, and they did not know if it was a joke, but it was confirmed by the mother through her Twitter account where she explained its meaning.

Let’s also remember the unusual names that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West chose for their fourth child Psalm (Salmo) West, or Kylie Jenner for their little girl Stormi (stormy=“stormy” in English). Kate Winslet named her baby Bear (Bear) and Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin chose Apple (Apple) for her little one.

The list of names is endless as there are always people looking for unrepeatable and unique names.
