Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar) that occurs due to abnormalities in insulin secretion, insulin action or both, which is caused by failure of the pancreas to produce adequate amounts of the hormone insulin and has an impact on increasing blood glucose levels.
Diabetes is one of the non-communicable diseases. However, this is one of the most important public health problems to pay attention to.
Internal Medicine Specialist from Siloam Hospitals Putera Bahagia Cirebon, Dr. Indraji Dwi Mulyawan, Sp.PD., MKes. said, uncontrolled diabetes can cause acute complications and chronic or chronic complications.
“This acute complication is dangerous. Because it is sudden and can endanger human life. As for chronic complications, apart from disrupting the quality of life, handling diabetes mellitus requires a relatively large amount of money,” said Doctor Indraji, Monday (22/3/2021).
According to Doctor Indraji, handling diabetes patients is carried out continuously and directed considering that during the Covid-19 pandemic, people with diabetes accompanied by heart disease are at risk and are very vulnerable to being exposed to the Corona virus which can damage organs.
“Blood glucose levels that easily rise or fall increase the risk of complications from Covid-19 for diabetic patients with heart disease. For example, chronic inflammation will accelerate,” said Doctor Indraji.
Dr. Indraji explained that the classic symptoms of diabetes include 3P, namely polyuria (lots of urination, especially at night), polydipsi (thirst), and polyphagy (easy hunger).
Other non-specific symptoms that can also appear in diabetics include rapid weight loss, fatigue, tingling in the feet and hands, itching, blurred vision, impotence, wounds that are difficult to heal, vaginal discharge, or fungal skin disease. especially in the skin folds.
“The best treatment is to immediately consult a doctor if you experience symptoms and to submit complaints that are still ongoing or are still being felt,” explained Indraji.
Diagnosis of diabetes itself is carried out by a doctor on a person by conducting medical interviews, physical examinations, and supporting examinations such as blood and urine tests.
Meanwhile, Gymnastics Instructor and health activist Citra Rosseline said it is necessary to do diabetes exercises to maintain health. In fact, diabetes exercises are similar to regular exercise, but the movements focus on a number of large muscles.
“This gymnastic movement is also carried out rhythmically and continuously for a long time,” said Citra.
According to Citra, diabetes exercise aims to make sufferers of this disease actively move so that their metabolism in the body is also better. The benefits of exercise that you will feel include helping to control blood sugar, lowering blood glucose levels and maintaining weight balance.
