Uncle Ben’s ‘racist’ rice is renamed | Cooking & Eating

The Uncle Ben’s brand and logo is perceived by some as racist. Mars had already indicated that it would revise the brand. “Uncle” was a common nickname for older male slaves or servants in the southern United States. The brand dates from 1943. The picture of the black man in the logo was added three years later.

More and more companies are responding to sensitivities surrounding racist expressions. It was previously announced that pancake brand Aunt Jemima will disappear. The name and logo of this brand are also controversial. Reason for parent company Quaker Foods, which is again part of PepsiCo, to scrap the brand. Unilever is changing the name of a face cream in India.
