The Uncle Ben’s brand, known for rice and sauces, will disappear. American food producer Mars scraps Uncle Ben’s logo, showing an older black man. The name is changed to Ben’s Originals.

Uncle Ben’s brand and logo are perceived by some as racist. Mars had already indicated that it wanted to revise the brand. “Uncle” was a common nickname for older male slaves or servants in the southern United States. The brand dates from 1943. The picture of the black man in the logo was added three years later. The new brand will be available in stores from next year.
By also removing the image, Mars is taking a bigger step than previously announced.
Earlier it became known that pancake brand Aunt Jemima will disappear. The name and logo of this brand are also controversial. Reason for parent company Quaker Foods, which is part of PepsiCo, to scrap the brand. Unilever then changes the name of a facial cream in India.
