The position of Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy is in doubt. Following the averting of the government shutdown Last night, Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz announced impeachment proceedings against him.
McCarthy’s emergency funding bill that ended the shutdown, or the shutdown of the American federal government, could end up killing him. The chairman knew that this was a possibility when he proposed the emergency law yesterday.
‘No one trusts McCarthy’
When McCarthy was nominated as chairman at the beginning of this year, he was fiercely criticized by the group of Trump loyalists. They accused him, among other things, of working too much with the Democrats. After fifteen rounds of voting, he ultimately received just enough support, but under the strict condition that if one member of Congress wants to impeach him, impeachment proceedings will be started. So Gaetz has said that he wants to do that. Normally a majority in the House is required to initiate such a procedure.
Gaetz is one of the Republican lawmakers who voted against McCarthy early this year. “The one thing everyone agrees on is that no one can trust Kevin McCarthy,” Gaetz said in an interview with CNN today.
There is a chance that McCarthy will not survive a procedure, because he narrowly won previous rounds. “The only way Kevin McCarthy can still be chairman at the end of next week is if the Democrats bail him out,” Gaetz thinks. “If you don’t believe in anything, like McCarthy, everything is negotiable and he could make a deal with the Democrats.”
McCarthy says in an initial response that he expects him to survive the vote. “This with Gaetz is personal.”

De shutdown threatened after a number of ultra-conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives refused to approve plans for the new year. The MPs demanded far-reaching cuts in education and social assistance, among other things, and they wanted to stop aid to Ukraine. The emergency financing law does not include new support for Ukraine.
A shutdown is almost always accompanied by a government shutdown. The money tap for large parts of the federal government would be turned off, resulting in hundreds of thousands of government employees not getting paid. Public places such as museums and national parks will also be closed in that case.
