“Uncertainty Looms Over Norway’s National Day Weather Forecast for 2023”

REPRISE?: It is certainly not certain. In 2022, there was glorious May 17 weather in Oslo, how the weather will be this year is extremely uncertain, says the meteorologist on duty.

“Sol sun come to me, rain go your way”, sings Anita Skorgan. The artist’s “Rainy Song” can very much be relevant on National Day.

Published:

– That is what is the problem now, it is so uncertain, answers meteorologist on duty, Iselin Skjervagen, to VG’s question about what the weather will be like on 17 May.

On Monday, when the weather forecast for National Day first appeared, there was not a drop in sight.

But now dark clouds (low pressure) threaten the imminent celebration:

The weather forecast service Pent.no shows on Friday morning that Oslo can receive as much as 5.6 millimeters of rain in the period from 06.00 to 12.00.

For Trondheim, the warning shows temporary stays during the day. In Tromsø, around 0.6 millimeters may fall, while in Bergen, 1.1 millimeters may fall in the same time period.

– Right now it seems that it will rain on the night of May 17 in southern Norway, but the latest forecast shows that it may continue throughout the day, says Skjervagen.

The meteorologist explains that right now there are many small low-pressure areas along the Norwegian coast, what they come up with will be decisive for whether you need an umbrella or light clothing.

– There are no clear weather systems that we can follow, which give us who are looking at this any concrete answers about how it will turn out. It is something like small low pressures, which are not very big, but which can bring rain, explains Skerjvagen.

However, there is a potential “winner” and “loser” when it comes to the national weather day.

– For the time being, it looks like Central Norway, Trøndelag, Møre and Romsdal, and perhaps the southern part of Nordland, are the ones getting the nicest weather. It is possibly somewhat safer there than elsewhere in the country, says Skjervagen.

At the other end of the scale:

– In Northern Norway it can get quite cold. In Troms and Finnmark, it can be between three and five degrees along the coast. For now, there is also a risk of sleet along the coast of Troms and Finnmark, but there are also indications of improvement during the day.

On Monday, Skjervag’s colleague, meteorologist Magnus Ovhed, was able to say that the probability of a stay in Eastern Norway was estimated at 70 per cent.

That has now changed, but at the same time it may change again.

– When can we expect a “certain” answer about the weather for May 17?

– Unfortunately, it is completely impossible to say. It depends on whether some very clear low pressure or high pressure forms, systems which are easy to analyse. When it is now a mixture, it becomes very difficult, Skjervagen says and adds:

– This will be exciting, we can hope that the low pressures can pull away from the coast, so that the weather will be good.
