Exciting scene at the US Open for women’s tennis. What is initially difficult to see in the TV images here can be seen much more clearly in videos circulating on X. In her third round match against Jasmine Paolini, with the score at 2:4 in the second set, a more than memorable scene takes place between Yulia Putintseva and this ball girl. Although the world number 31 calls for a ball twice, she then completely ignores it and lets it bounce off her body, motionless. A gesture that hardly anyone in the legendary Arthur Ashe Stadium liked – the Russian-born player quickly rains down boos and whistles. Germany’s tennis legend Boris Becker also dislikes the 29-year-old’s action. He writes on X: “Who does Putintseva think she is? Terrible behavior towards the ball girl.” Putintseva has since apologized to the ball girl in an Instagram post. She was frustrated and not focused on the task at hand. On top of that, she suffered a hefty 0-2 defeat against Paolini. That will probably haunt Putintseva for a long time to come…
