The election of Miss Germany this week adds to the list of controversies in the election of a country of its representative in the Miss Universe “beauty contest”, after this Saturday the Iranian Apameh Schönauer, 39, was chosen. as a winner.
The woman, an architect in her late 40s who also has two children, was crowned the most “beautiful” in the country, in the contest held at Europa Park, a venue in the town of Rust, southwest of Germany.
The verdict of the contest judges caused great controversy, as many consider that Schönauer is not the most beautiful, in fact, she is not even attractive, which is why she has been harshly criticized for her physique. It is also argued that she is too old, and users recalled that previously the rules did not allow mothers to compete.
Likewise, her nationality caused a scandal, since, although the woman has been a resident of Berlin for decades, she is originally from Iran, adding to scandals such as Miss Japan, where a Ukrainian won, although she later had to decline the title due to a scandal.
However, the organizers of the contest defended the decision of the jury, made up of six members, including Vivian Wolfe (writer) and Sharon Batiste (actress), who chose the winner from among 15,000 women who applied to participate in the contest.
The new twist of Miss Germany
Organizers explained that the pageant, which was originally held as a beauty contest, has fundamentally changed since 2019 and its regulations have been revised. Now contestants are no longer judged by their appearance, but by their personality, individual commitment, creativity or their lives.

Tamara Schwab, from Bavaria, was one of the participants who has been living with a donated heart for two and a half years. Kristina Medrjewski from Dinslaken, another contestant, suffers from a rare autoimmune disease and has to use a wheelchair due to immobility of her limbs.
“I think it’s very good that the competition has changed so much. Today, instead of a one-sided image of women, we see a vision of people’s lives,” said Lisa Pauss, Family Minister of the Greens in Germany, in a video message.
“It’s not a pretty pageant at all,” added Kira Geiss, a religious activist and founder of a youth association in the city of Magdeburg, who was Miss Germany last year.
Among the changes applied to the contest is that the age limit of 39 years is eliminated and all women over 18 can participate. The winner no longer receives a crown, and her dress is decorated only with a ribbon.
Apameh Schönauer beat her eight competitors in the final of the competition, winning a prize of 25,000 euros. In her speech, the activist and founder of an organization helping oppressed women, she announced her commitment to women’s rights, especially in Iran.
