Unanswered Questions: Swiss Flight SWR22 Takes Bizarre Route with ‘Emergency Traffic’ Label

After the regular start at Geneva Airport, the Swiss flight SWR22 with the destination New York has traveled a strange route: According to data from the Flightradar24 platform, the machine flew in a north-westerly direction out of Swiss airspace, then made a loop over France and flew back in via Thun towards Central Switzerland. The machine turned again over Lake Lucerne and flew over Lichtenstein before finally landing at Zurich Airport. The flight can no longer be tracked on Flightradar.

When asked by 20 Minuten, Skyguide’s Vladi Barrosa confirmed that SWR22 was currently operating with the “Emergency Traffic” label, which could indicate a medical emergency on board. What exactly is behind the strange route of the Airbus A330-300 is currently not conclusively clear – a request to the airline has so far remained unanswered by Swiss.
