DOKKUM – The municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân checked several garages at the Uithof in Dokkum unannounced on Tuesday. The garages were searched together with the police and customs. Illegal occupation and commercial activity were found, among other things.
This type of inspection checks whether the garage boxes are used according to the rules. It regularly happens that people live in it, contain prohibited items or, for example, material for a cannabis farm. The landlord and/or owner often does not know what the garage is used for. This can cause dangerous situations.

There is little social control at the garages at the Uithof and supervision is minimal. Mayor Kramer indicated that there were some signals and that it is important that he be checked. “Not only to see if illegal things happen, but also for those who are doing good. They must know that we are also there for them. So it works both ways”.
More frequent checks
The municipality is authorized by its administrative law task to carry out such controls and wants to do so more often. “The goal is to end illegal situations and, what’s even better, to prevent them. We also want people to become more aware of certain issues”, according to Mayor Kramer.
Subversion
Organized crime is getting closer. Examples of subversion include drug trafficking, money laundering, real estate fraud and threats and intimidation.
Criminals use services from the ‘top world’ for their illegal activities. This includes applying for permits, arranging housing or distributing goods. Due to this mixing of the underworld with the upper world, people or companies can unintentionally come into contact with criminals.
