UNAM develops new pharmaceutical preparation using seaweed to treat diabetes and cancer

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), released a new pharmaceutical preparation developed by the school, which could help treat certain diseases including: diabetes and certain types of cancer.

Yodica It is the name that has been given to the new medicine which is created mainly by molecular iodine, naturally present exclusively in fresh marine algae.

According to Dr. Aceves and her collaborators, contributes to optimal organ function iodine binders, such as the thyroid, prostate, breasts, pancreas, ovaries, and the immune and nervous systems.

According to the developers, ‘Yodica’ is useful for prevent diseases such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Likewise, it has been shown to have an effective use in the treatment of pathologies such as prostatic hyperplasia, mammary fibrosis and ovarian cysts.

seaweed and health

Las seaweed fresh from the genus Laminaria, according to the university researcher, have 30 thousand times more iodine than any other living being. This element, in its chemical form as molecular iodine, has antioxidant properties and prevents the abnormal growth of different epithelia and cancer cells.

Given this, the UNAM explains that Yodica is a compound made with potassium iodide and molecular iodine, obtained from fresh seaweed. It is taken in drops and at the recommended dose.

In 2005, Dr. Aceves and her team conducted research using molecular iodine in rodents with breast and prostate cancer. Their results showed that iodine exhibited antiproliferative and preventative effects.

According to the authors, molecular iodine It is not an anticancer but it can act as an adjuvant to make chemotherapy work better, preventing resistance to treatment and mitigating adverse side effects in normal cells.
