Unair Students Create Alternative Energy from Waste Cooking Oil, Involve Catering in Sidoarjo

SURYA.co.id | SURABAYA – The need for energy, especially oil, is increasing and dependence on fossil energy must also begin to be reduced.

In response to this, five Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) students came up with the idea of a Waco-gel product, a fuel made from solid waste cooking oil as an environmentally friendly alternative energy.

The five students were Muhammad Anang Jazuli, Firman Hidayat, Ningsih Putri Herman, and Muhammad Fajar Faliasthiunus Pradipta.

The four of them are from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) while Haflan Alfiri Widraat is from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB).

The manufacturing process of Waco-gel uses simple technology and equipment.

Where waste from biofuel (cooking oil) which was initially volatile was compacted in the form of biogel.

The team leader, Anang, explained the reasons for choosing used cooking oil.

According to him, used cooking oil has high fatty acids because it goes through an esterification and transesterification reaction process.

Furthermore, Anang also mentioned some of the advantages of Waco-gel products.

Among them are renewable, do not produce smoke during combustion, do not cause symptoms, do not produce harmful gases, are non-carcinogenic, and non-corrosive.
