Professor of Airlangga University (Unair) JE Sahetapy die on Tuesday (21/9), at 06.57 WIB this morning.
The news was confirmed by the Head of the Center for Public Communication and Information Unair, Dr. Martha Kurnia Kusumawardani. He said the information was obtained from the family of the deceased.
“That’s right, he died this morning, around 6-7 am,” said Martha when confirmed CNNIndonesia.com.
Prof Sahetapy, as he was commonly known, died at the age of 89. However, Martha did not know what the exact cause of the legal expert’s death was.
“Because of age. We are still waiting for information from the family,” he said.
Martha added that it was planned that the late man who was born on June 6, 1932 would be buried in the Grand Heaven funeral home.
Martha said Unair also expressed deep condolences for the death of one of its great teachers. Unair has lost a figure who is highly dedicated to the world of law and education in Indonesia.
“We are saddened by the passing of Prof. Sahetapy. May the bereaved family be given fortitude and patience,” he said.
Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Party DPP, Jansen Sitindaon, shared the sad news via his Twitter account, @jansen_jsp, Tuesday (21/9).
According to him, Jacob is someone who has integrity and extraordinary knowledge. He also said that the person who has a dissertation related to the death penalty is a source of pride for people who have studied at FH Unair.
“Prof. JE Sahetapy has passed away this morning at the age of 89 years. A Professor with a special place in the world of Indonesian law, with integrity and extraordinary knowledge. His dissertation on the “death penalty” was a champion of his time. His name has become the pride of us having studied at FH Unair‘ said Jansen.
Jacob Elfinus Sahetapy or better known as Prof Sahetapy is a professor of law at Airlangga University, Surabaya. He was born on June 6, 1932 in Saparua. After graduating from high school in Surabaya, he continued his studies at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga.
He then continued his studies at the University of Utah, United States in 1962. After returning from college in Uncle Sam’s country, he was accused of being a CIA spy and was only able to start teaching in 1979.
Not only teaching at Airlangga University, he also has an academic career at Diponegoro University and University of Indonesia.
Sahetapy was once involved in the political arena and was a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission II of the PDIP Faction which he was active in from 1999-2004.
