Unacceptable Quality: Popular Tea Brand Exceeds Legal Limits For Contaminants

Retail chains offer a large number of different products, but it turns out that not all of them are subject to adequate quality control. Otherwise, it could not happen so often that when the state inspection comes, it finds some unpleasant defect.

Limits exceeded

Recently, however, it seems to be happening more and more often. This may be due to the fact that the State Agricultural and Food Inspectorate carries out more checks, but also because there is more disorder in the shops, or an attempt to buy the cheapest possible goods, even with the risk that they will not be quite good. Then it’s only a step away from being shown to actually even be objectionable.

Currently, this happened in the case of a very popular tea, which people are very happy to buy. It is a mint herbal tea portioned in bags, which is sold under the name K Classic, which is Kaufland’s private brand. Recently, it is products with this brand that often fail in these analyses.

The maximum limit for the content of contaminating substances was exceeded in the food” stated SZPI in its message o product. “Analysis in the accredited laboratory of SZPI in Prague confirmed the above-limit content of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the tea in question, in the amount of 657 micrograms per kilogram (µg/kg). At the same time, the maximum permitted limit according to the relevant legal regulation is only 400 µg/kg.

Away with him

Although the sample was taken from Kaufland in Šumperk, in this case it is not something that would be limited to one store. Apparently, the Polish manufacturer made a mistake, so the entire batch with an expiration date of May 2025 will probably be affected.

In no case should you consume this tea, as you would just be leaching dangerous substances. You can try to return it to a Kaufland store with a voucher for this SZPI find.
