Kaczynski, who studied at Harvard and was a former mathematics professor, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole in May 1998 for sending 16 explosive letters by mail since 1978, which, when opened, killed three people and injured 29 others. As his victims, he chose mainly the teaching forces of universities and airlines.

In 1993, the FBI established a special unit to search for him. A million-dollar reward was offered for information leading to the capture of the Unabomber, and tens of thousands of people responded to the call. Kaczynski was tracked down thanks to his brother. Ted Kaczynski was arrested in April 1996 in the state of Montana, where he was staying in a small forest cabin.

Kaczynski had distributed a manifesto expressing the idea that the development of science and technology is crippling humanity. It called for a world revolution against the industrial-technological system that has robbed people of their inner freedom and self-respect. The New York Times and the Washington Post split over publishing the manifesto when the Unabomber promised to stop bombing if he did.
