The United States (US) economy continues to face challenges. One of them is the increase in the number of homeless people or the homeless due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
According to Meidy, an Indonesian citizen who lives in Los Angeles, the number of homeless people in the US continues to grow. “Many people are now homeless. Because they can’t afford to pay rent anymore,” he told detikcom, Tuesday (7/6/2022).
These homeless are employees who choose to resign from their previous job. They expect new jobs that are more promising but difficult because the economy is not yet stable.
“They don’t want to work anymore. So they are looking for new jobs that produce better salaries. But in fact, many companies are also going bankrupt because of the effects of the pandemic yesterday,” he said.
Another challenge faced is rising prices in almost all parts of the US. Several commodities, such as fuel, meat, and chicken pieces rose drastically.
Meidy said the soaring price of gasoline had triggered criminal acts. Several cases of theft were reported by using a drill to drill a hole in the fuel cap, then draining the fuel inside.
Currently, the price of fuel in the region ranges from US$ 6 or Rp. 86,400 to US$ 7 or Rp. 100,400 (exchange rate of Rp. 14,400) per gallon. Before the Ukraine war, the most expensive gasoline price was still at US$ 4 or Rp. 57,600.
The stock of goods in some supermarkets is also problematic. “Sometimes the stock is empty, unlike the previous year, the stock is always full,” he explained. Even according to Meidy, the stock of formula milk for babies per day has run out.
