She will join the 67th World Delegation of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW67). The event, which will take place in New York from March 6 to 17, will focus on the themes of innovation and technological change, as well as education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls.
The sociology teacher in the Cégep’s Social Sciences and Leisure Management and Intervention programs holds a master’s degree in sociology specializing in feminist and gender studies, a college diploma in the development of tourism products, a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a certificate in women’s studies. She is currently writing her first manuscript on the dynamics of interracial couples and biraciality in Quebec, focusing on the children born of these unions. Her passion for gender and diversity issues has led her to advocate for the empowerment of social minorities and to give them a voice.
“Being part of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women delegation is for me a prestigious opportunity to reflect without borders (literally) on issues that have daily impacts on socially marginalized groups. Voluntarily and actively bringing the voice of women and gender minorities to the center is an empowerment initiative that I strongly advocate. I believe that education and the exchange of ideological perspectives are the keys to intellectual emancipation. I aspire to bring the knowledge gained from my experience at the UN back into my teachings and to my community”says Magalie Lefebvre.
In recent years, the teacher has been involved in several initiatives that revolve around a common subject: social justice and the analysis of power relations. After working six years in international cooperation, particularly between Rwanda and Quebec, she was coordinator of a research collective on migration and racism at the University of Ottawa. At the same university, she was also an equity commissioner and facilitator of Healing sessions for people of color during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This experience at the CSW67 delegation will certainly be a source of inspiration for the entire Cégep de Rivière-du-Loup community.
