The United Nations also highlighted its willingness to extend its Verification Mission in case it is entrusted with the task of monitoring the implementation of a possible ceasefire agreement between the Government of Colombia and the Central General Staff, when the time comes.

Unanimously, the United Nations Security Council decided to extend its Verification Mission in Colombia in order to support the Government’s talks with armed groups and verify the ceasefire agreed between the Government and the ELN.
Considering that the ceasefire between the Government of Colombia and the ELN should contribute to improving the humanitarian situation in the areas affected by the conflict, and encouraging the parties to continue strengthening the protection of civilians in accordance with international law humanitarian”assures the Council in the resolution expanding the mandate.
Taking into account their agreement to monitor the ceasefire, the Council decided to authorize an “increase of up to 68 additional international observers in the Mission’s current strength, as well as an adequate civilian component.”
The United Kingdom delegation, which has led the process in Colombia, assured that this decision demonstrates the commitment of the United Nations to support peace in Colombia. Also, in the middle of the voting meeting, the representative of Brazil spoke as the guarantor country.
“We hope that a similar agreement will be reached with the group Estado Mayor Central of the FARC with verifiable protocols. Brazil fully supports the strategy of the government of President Petro to achieve total peace in Colombia and recognizes the need for additional dialogues to expand the benefits of peace in the country.” expressed the Brazilian ambassador.
