UN welcomes US vaccine donation to COVAX

The United Nations Secretary General welcomed the announcement that the United States will donate millions of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to the agency-supported COVAX program, as well as to individual countries and front-line personnel from the United Nations. the UN in dangerous places.

António Guterres is also “extremely grateful” to the Joe Biden government for including the agency’s workers and diplomats and the staff of its 193 members in the US vaccination program, added UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

Biden announced Thursday the immediate donation of a first batch of 25 million doses through the COVAX program, which has so far shipped just 76 million to nations in need.

In total, the White House plan includes the delivery of 80 million doses worldwide until the end of June, most through the mechanism that seeks equity in the distribution of drugs against the coronavirus.

According to Dujarric, the donation to UN frontline personnel will allow them “to stay and perform crucial services for vulnerable people around the world safely and effectively.”

Guterres also renewed his call for countries to share their vaccines, especially with those fighting new outbreaks and variants, the spokesperson added.

“There is an urgent need for greater global solidarity to ensure that vaccines are available to everyone, everywhere,” he said.
