UN warns that children in Gaza are facing a dire disaster. More than 40 percent of the dead in the four-week war are children.
An estimated 3,900 children were killed. 1,250 children are missing. Children trapped in the rubble have little chance of survival, the UN’s Joint Agencies for Children, Women, Health Services and Palestine Refugees said.
UN agencies point out that an average of 130 people are killed every day over a 29-day period.
Among those at risk are children born during wartime. There are about 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza, and some women have to give birth in shelters, in homes and on the streets amid the rubble. Premature babies in incubators are also at risk.
UNICEF has also warned of the risk of infant deaths due to dehydration. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said that children are getting sick after drinking salt water. The organization also points out that the majority of child survivors of attacks have severe psychological stress or trauma.
