UN urges ceasefire in Gaza: Guterres criticizes escalation of bombing

Approximate reading time: 1 minute, 29 seconds

In the midst of one of the most devastating humanitarian crises of the century, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has raised his voice in an urgent call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This request comes after the UN General Assembly approved a resolution with an overwhelming majority in support of a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory.

Guterres, on a visit to Qatar, expressed alarm at what he described as an “unprecedented escalation of bombing” by Israel in Gaza, which has left the region devastated and caused a breakdown in communications. The Secretary General regretted that this large-scale military action is undermining the humanitarian objectives of the ceasefire resolution and stressed the prevailing need to reverse this situation.

The senior UN official reiterated his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, as well as the unconditional release of the hostages and the delivery of humanitarian aid that meets the dramatic needs of the people of Gaza. The situation in Gaza is heartbreaking, and Guterres stressed that he is witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe before his eyes.

Guterres’s words came after Gaza experienced one of the heaviest nights of Israeli bombing since the start of the conflict. Additionally, the Israeli Army announced the expansion of its ground operations in the Gaza Strip, declaring that the war against Hamas has entered “a new phase.” This escalation of violence is a response to the ceasefire resolution approved by the UN General Assembly, which had overwhelming support of 120 votes in favor.

The war in Gaza has had devastating consequences, with more than 7,700 Palestinians killed due to Israeli bombing. Gaza’s civilian population is suffering unimaginably, with the influx of humanitarian aid flowing slowly, prompting Guterres to call for all parties to take responsibility for it. In his words, “it is the moment of truth, history is judging us all.”

The international community faces a moral crossroads where urgent action is required to end the violence and suffering in Gaza. Guterres’ call reflects widespread concern about the situation and the need for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid. The hope is that this warning from the UN Secretary General will lead to concrete actions that will alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza and lay the foundation for a lasting solution to this ongoing conflict.
