The vote in the UN Security Council on the request of the Palestinians to become a state-full member of the Organization will be held today, Thursday, April 18, according to diplomatic sources cited by the Reuters agency.
The request is expected to be blocked by the US, Israel’s ally, as if accepted, it would effectively mean recognition of the Palestinian state.
The 15-member Council initially intended to proceed to a vote tomorrow, Friday, April 19. According to the diplomats, the procedure was set for 17.00 today, New York time (midnight, Greek time).
The Palestinians this month restarted the process of joining the organization as a full member state, citing Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip, where the slaughter of civilians has continued for more than six months.
They also cited the continued expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, even though they are considered illegal under international law.
It is noted that in November 2012, Palestine secured by a vote of the General Assembly “the status of a non-member observer state”.
