UN: Taliban kill, use child soldiers and arbitrarily lock people up

More than 100 soldiers, fighters and civilians have been killed since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan. The new rulers are also guilty of recruiting child soldiers and violating women’s rights, the United Nations says.

At least 72 murders are attributable to the Taliban, according to the UN Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights. In a number of cases, the victims’ bodies have been put on public display, contributing to a climate of fear among the population.

The Taliban also killed at least 50 suspected members of a local branch of the terrorist group IS, which is diametrically opposed to the Taliban in Afghanistan. They have been hanged or beheaded, Nada Nashif told the UN Human Rights Council.

In addition, at least eight activists and two journalists have been killed in the country in recent months and the UN has documented 59 cases of people detained without trial. There are also disappearances. “The safety of Afghan judges, prosecutors and lawyers, especially women, is a major concern,” Nashif said.

Ethnic cleansing

She fears a winter of hunger and poverty threatens for many people. There are reports of child labour, marrying off and even selling children.

“The Taliban’s capture of Kabul completely reverses the progress of the past 20 years,” said Nasir Ahmad Andisha, the ambassador of the previous Afghan government, who is still regarded by the UN as his country’s representative.

“They commit all kinds of crimes with impunity, without being documented in any way.” He says ethnic cleansing is underway in several parts of the country.
