A virtual General Assembly is a first since the creation of the United Nations 75 years ago. The Covid got the better of the annual meeting of heads of state and government from around the world. Sophie Wilmès must be satisfied with a pre-recorded video message which will be broadcast on Saturday evening.

IJust one year ago, Charles Michel spoke at the podium of the United Nations General Assembly as Prime Minister. It was September 26, 2019. It was beautiful in New York that day, the Indian summer in the USA version in all its glory. Too beautiful, no doubt… As every year since 1951, the leaders of the whole world had met in the city that never sleeps. The Manhattan peninsula, where the imposing building donated to the organization in 1951 by John Rockefeller Junior is located, was under siege.
No one would have imagined for a single second that the next “UNGA” (United Nations General Assembly), the 75th, would be purely virtual… It was a failure for Sophie Wilmès and Philippe Goffin who hoped to speak there this year. The Covid has been there and New York is under siege, but for health reasons. It is indeed the most affected city in the United States.
