The Security Council of the United Nations (UN) begins to analyze, from Monday, the request for recognition of Palestine as a member state of the UN, and not just as an observer.
The news agency Efe writes that the Security Council has scheduled the topic “Admission of new members” for Monday, with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, also scheduled to read the formal letter presented this week by the diplomatic mission Palestinian.
Palestine has been considered an “observer state” at the UN since 2012, a status it only shares with the Vatican, although a year earlier it requested entry as a full member.
In 2011, a request for full membership was made, but remained pending because the Security Council was unable to reach consensus for a formal decision.
At the time, the United States announced that it intended to use veto power if a majority of nine was reached, despite proclaiming support for the “two-state solution”.
This week, 120 United Nations Member States – out of a total of 193 – pledged to support Palestine’s full membership in the organization.
