United Nations Security Council (DK PBB) is back in the spotlight after postponing the voting or voting on the resolution regarding the ceasefire in Gaza.

The UNSC was supposed to vote on Monday (18/12). However, they postponed it, so far there is no clear information regarding the reason for the delay.

A number of sources said delays were expected as negotiations continued over the text of the draft resolution document.

Apart from that, for more than a month Israel launched an aggression against the UN Security Council and received criticism because it was considered incompetent in carrying out its duties.

Throughout the aggression, the UNSC only passed one resolution when the unit was led by China. Discussion of the resolution was not held, but when it was about to be issued, several members of this unit vetoed each other.

The veto right in the UN is a right that permanent members can use to cancel decisions, decrees or draft regulations.

A new resolution can be issued if it receives approval from nine non-permanent members and there is no veto from the permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council are the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China.

Then, why does the UNSC only have the veto right?

The five countries have veto rights to give them strength and because they were the winners of World War II.

According to the UN charter, the five countries will continue to play a role in international maintenance and security. This big role is attached because they are considered to have initiated the organization.

“They were granted special status as Permanent Member States in the Security Council, along with special voting rights known as the ‘right to veto’,” said an official UN release.

According to an official UN release, as long as it has veto rights, the US has used the privilege 84 times since 1946.

China has used their veto power 18 times, and Russia has vetoed it 124 times.

Meanwhile, Britain used veto rights 29 times and France 16 times.

The drafters of the UN Charter agreed that if one of the permanent members of the UNSC voted, the resolution or decision would not be approved.

Apart from having veto rights, they can also abstain if they do not fully agree with a resolution.
