New York –
security Council United Nations (UN) rejected the proposed resolution Russia related to the war between Israel and Hamas. UN Security Council members refused to support a motion that did not name Hamas as the perpetrator of attacks on Israel that killed more than 1,400 people.
As reported AFPTuesday (17/10/2023), UN Security Council held the meeting as Israel prepared to launch a ground offensive against the Gaza Strip, after a series of airstrikes and artillery fire rained down on the Palestinian enclave for more than a week.
The Palestinian health authority reports that so far more than 2,800 people, mostly civilians, have died as a result of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
At the UN Security Council meeting held on Monday (16/10) local time, only four countries voted in favor of the resolution proposed by Russia. Four other countries, including the United States (US), voted against it, while the remaining six countries abstained.
A second draft resolution submitted by Brazil with strong language condemning Hamas appears to have wider support in the UN Security Council forum, and is expected to be voted on on Tuesday (17/10) evening local time.
Responding to the rejection, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the resolution had encouraged the UN Security Council to take action.
“It has contributed to the launch of substantive discussions within the Security Council on this topic. Without our encouragement, everything might have been limited to empty discussions,” he said.
