Jakarta –
The United Nations (UN) Security Council failed again to create a consensus to stop the war between Israel and Hamas on the Strip Gaza. The reason is that the United States (US) and Britain opposed the resolution plan because it mentioned a ceasefire.
The previous UN Security Council session also failed to agree on a resolution regarding the Gaza Strip, including because of two vetoes from the US. This situation further underscores the complexity of achieving consensus on this important issue.
It is known that the UN Security Council resolution is different from the resolution of the UN General Assembly, which in an emergency meeting at the end of October succeeded in passing a resolution calling for an ‘immediate humanitarian ceasefire’ in the Gaza Strip.
The UN General Assembly resolution regarding the ceasefire received 122 votes in favor and 14 votes against, with 55 other countries abstaining. Although supported by the majority of member countries, UN General Assembly resolutions are not binding and only reflect the positions of various countries.
Meanwhile, UN Security Council resolutions are known to be legally binding, and can be used to demand that Israel accept a ceasefire or humanitarian pause in the Gaza Strip.
US and UK Reject Resolution Plan
As reported CNN, Tuesday (7/11/2023), the UN Security Council held a closed session on Monday (6/11), local time. It is hoped that the session will produce a resolution to deal with the war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“There is no agreement at this time,” said Deputy US Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, in a statement.
The draft resolution was previously prepared by the E-10 group, which consists of 10 non-permanent member countries of the UN Security Council.
However, the US and UK, who are both permanent members of the UN Security Council, and have veto rights, opposed the draft resolution.
Western countries, especially the US and UK, rejected the contents of the resolution which included a call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. In fact, the call for a ceasefire has been supported by several other members of the UN Security Council.
