The UN Security Council has entered into a discussion on whether to hold an open meeting on North Korean human rights issues.
The Security Council held an open meeting at the United Nations Headquarters on the 17th (local time) and put forward an agenda for discussion on North Korean human rights issues jointly submitted by South Korea, the United States and Japan.
However, since China, a permanent member of the board of directors, has expressed its opposition to holding a North Korean human rights conference, it is expected that the meeting will be decided through a procedural vote.
In procedural voting, permanent members do not have the right to veto, so an agenda is passed if at least 9 out of 15 members agree.
If the meeting is held, it is expected that for the first time in about six years since 2017, an open discussion on North Korean human rights issues will be held at the Security Council.
