UN Security Council Condemns Houthi Attacks in Red Sea: US Ambassador Blames Iran

Atlanta, United States (CNN) – On Wednesday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution calling on the Houthi rebels in Yemen to stop their attacks in the Red Sea and violate international law.

The vote came with a majority of 11 votes, with four abstentions, including Russia and China.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said, “The resolution calls on the Houthis to stop violating international law. The United States applauds the United Nations Security Council’s adoption today of a resolution co-authored by the United States and Japan that condemns Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. The resolution unequivocally calls for “The Houthis must stop their attacks and confirm the Council’s support for the navigational rights and freedoms of ships for all countries in the Red Sea in accordance with international law.”

The resolution condemned twenty Houthi attacks on commercial and merchant ships since November 19, when the Houthis first attacked and seized the Galaxy Leader commercial ship.

UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward said the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea “have hurt the world’s poorest people.”

She added: “Yesterday, the Houthis attempted their largest attack to date, launching at least 21 missiles and drones towards international shipping lanes. 15% of the total global maritime trade passes through the Red Sea. These attacks threaten the availability and prices of food and energy, which is It would inevitably hit the world’s poorest people hardest.

Woodward continued: “Yesterday was the twenty-sixth such attack since November 19.”

Earlier, the United Nations Security Council rejected three proposed amendments to the Red Sea text by Russia, after the amendments failed to obtain the nine votes required to present the matter to the Council.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield blamed Iran for helping the Houthis.
