New York (AP) – The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the coup in West African Niger and expressed its concern about its effects in the region.
Panel members expressed concern in a statement Friday about the “negative impact of unconstitutional changes in government in the region, an increase in terrorist activity and the desperate social and economic situation.” Developments in Niger undermined efforts to strengthen peace and stability in the country
The members of the Security Council also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of the democratically elected President Mohammed Bazoum. This was fixed on Wednesday by the Presidential Guard. The suspected person responsible for the coup, General Omar Tchiani, declared himself President of the National Council and thus the ruler of the country yesterday. Nothing was initially known about the whereabouts of Bazoum. The United Nations assumed he was at home and doing well.
The Security Council also expressed its support for the efforts of the West African confederation of states Ecowas, the African Union and the United Nations on Friday. The body called for the urgent need to restore constitutional order in Niger.
