United Nations Secretary-General Guterres warned on July 17 that the world has been “severely off track” to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and he called on countries to “make a difference in 2023” and step up action now.
Guterres said at the opening of the ministerial meeting of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development that there is currently “lack of progress on more than half of the Sustainable Development Goals … nearly a third of the goals have stalled or regressed”.
Guterres said that greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, huge inequality still exists, and the hunger situation has returned to the level of 2005. According to the current progress, nearly 600 million people will still be living in extreme poverty by 2030. He pointed out that fragile and limited progress has been severely hindered by the new crown epidemic, the growing climate crisis, and widespread conflict.
He warned that the current funding gap for the Sustainable Development Goals has risen to about $4.2 trillion, up from $2.5 trillion before the pandemic.
Guterres urged the international community to act immediately. He called on countries to come up with clear plans and commitments at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals summit in September to strengthen national action by 2030.
Guterres emphasized that developed countries should fulfill their commitments on climate financing, including delivering the promised US$100 billion this year.
Guterres said that “there is still time for change” and called on all countries to cherish the time and keep their promises.
