UN Secretary-General Expresses Concern over Violations of Humanitarian Law in Gaza, Drawing Mixed Reactions

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres yesterday expressed concern about “clear” violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza, sparking positive responses and praise on Arab social media platforms.

Guterres said – in his speech before the Security Council yesterday, Tuesday – that it is important to realize that the attacks of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) “did not occur in a vacuum,” noting that the attacks that Israel was subjected to on October 7 “do not justify The mass killing taking place in Gaza.

These and other statements by the Secretary-General of the United Nations sparked a lot of controversy among Israeli political circles, and on the other hand, witnessed positive responses among the pioneers of communication platforms in the Arab world.

Social media users praised Guterres’s speech, even though it came late, they said, at a time when others called on the Arab rulers to take a position similar to Guterres’s position regarding what is happening to the people of the Gaza Strip.

They also called for an end to the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip, lifting the siege on it, and the entry of medical supplies, food, and fuel.

As an Israeli reaction to Guterres’ statements, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen canceled a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Cohen accused the Secretary-General of the United Nations of being “not qualified” to lead the international organization, calling on him to resign immediately.

In turn, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, commented on Guterres’ statements through his account on the English-language “The Secretary-General is completely disconnected from the reality in our region, and views the massacre committed by the Nazi Hamas terrorists in a distorted and immoral manner.”

He added that his statement that “the Hamas attacks did not occur in a vacuum expresses an understanding with terrorism and murder. It is truly sad that the head of the organization that emerged after the Holocaust holds such terrible views. It is a tragedy.”

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation also said that Tel Aviv is considering whether to agree to grant visas to UN employees after Guterres’ statements.

It is noteworthy that António Guterres is a Portuguese politician who held internal and external positions in his country, and the United Nations General Assembly chose him on October 13, 2016 to the position of UN Secretary-General, succeeding South Korean Ban Ki-moon.
