UN Secretary General called on developed countries to allocate up to 0.20% of national income to help the least developed countries

UN Secretary General António Guterres said that developed countries must fulfill their obligation to help the least developed countries. He called for 0.15-0.20% of gross national income to be allocated to help such states.

“It is also time for the developed countries to fulfill their commitment to provide the least developed countries with 0.15-0.20% of their gross national income in official development assistance,” António Guterres said at the opening of the conference on the development of the least developed countries in Qatar (quote from RIA Novosti).

According to him, the least developed countries are in a difficult position against the backdrop of crisis, uncertainty, climate chaos and deep global injustice. Mr. Guterres noted that these countries are not keeping up with “lightning-fast technological changes.”

Mr. Guterres recalled that the UN adheres to the goal of obtaining the support of member countries on the issue of annually allocating at least $500 billion a year to developing countries.

In November 2022, following the annual UN climate conference in Egypt, it was decided to create a fund to compensate the poorest developing countries for losses from irreversible climate change. Developed countries will contribute money to this fund voluntarily.
