UN reports 2,000 new displaced people in Haiti in two days

New York. More than two thousand people have been displaced from their homes in the Haitian capital in just two days due to clashes between armed groups, the United Nations (UN) reported on Tuesday.

The agency recorded these rates between September 11 and 13 in the Cité Soleil and Delmas neighborhoods, following violent incidents by gangs that further aggravated the situation for civilians in the metropolitan area.

According to United Nations estimates, more than 170,000 people are displaced in Port-au-Prince alone.

Although most of them are staying with foster families, three other temporary settlements have emerged following the most recent movements.

The United Nations and its partners are continuing to deliver food, water, sanitation and aid despite low funding and expanding violence, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, told reporters on Tuesday.

The Humanitarian Response Plan for the Caribbean country has only 39 percent of the $674 million requested by the UN.

“We continue to call for greater support for the humanitarian response to help the Haitian people,” the spokesperson said.
