Secretary-General António Guterres wants countries to work on compensation for the history of slavery. According to him, this is appropriate, because the system has caused enormous damage on a human and economic level.
Guterres writes in a report that no country has yet fully accounted for its own role in the history of slavery, reports The Guardian.
The Secretary-General acknowledges that “in the context of the mistakes made in the past and the damage suffered by colonialism and slavery” it can be very difficult to assess the economic damage.
“This is due to the time that has passed and the difficulty in identifying perpetrators and victims,” he wrote.
‘We cannot say that the claim does not exist’
But the UN chief emphasizes in his report that this should not be a reason to “state that the underlying, justified legal claim is not justified”.
According to human rights organizations, the report is an important step in recognizing the suffering of the past of slavery and the struggle for justice for the descendants of enslaved people.
